Katarína Mašterová, PhD.

Researcher at the Department of Art of the 19th–21st Centuries and CVF – Photography Research Centre.

Katarína Mašterová studied art history and archeology at the Faculty of Arts and the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University in Prague (PhD. 2015). She completed a study stay at the Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV). She has been employed as a researcher at the Institute of Art History since 2016 and is one of the founding members of the Center for Photography Research (CVF). She is currently a co-investigator of the grant project The Matrix of Photomechanical Reproductions: Histories of Remote Access to Art (Lumina Quaeruntur, 2023–2027). Earlier she was a co-investigator (and the principal investigator in 2019–2020) of the grant project Josef Sudek and the Photographic Reproduction of Works of Art: From a Private Art Archive to the Representing a Cultural Heritage (NAKI II, 2016–2020) and participated in its outcomes such as publications, exhibitions, conference, interactive map, certificated methodology and online database (www.sudekproject.cz). She is the author of the exhibition and the monograph Svoboda+Palcr: Seeing Sculptures (2019). In her research, she focuses on the history of photography of the 20th century, reproductions of works of art, photographic archive, photomechanical reproductions, and photographers Josef Sudek and Jan Svoboda. From 2023, she teaches the history of applied photography at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague. In the past, she worked as an archaeologist at the Institute of Archeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and co-founded the non-profit Gallery K4 (2010–2014).
