Mgr. et Mgr. Jan Dienstbier, Ph.D.

Editor of the journal Umění, researcher and colaborator of the Department of Medieval Art

Jan Dienstbier studied mathematical statistics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University (PhD 2011) and history of art at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (PhD 2018). Between 2009 and 2011, he worked as a researcher-pedagogue at the Technical University in Liberec and between 2016 and 2020, he was an assistant professor in the Medieval Studies program at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University. Since 2021, he has been employed at the Institute of Art History at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, as a researcher (2021–2024), and subsequently as an assistant professor (since 2024). Since 2016, he has been employed at IAH CAS as an investigator of various grant projects connected with medieval art (INTERCOST: Participation through Prayer in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Central Europe; GAČR: Libri precum: The Book of Hours of King Wenceslas IV in the Context of Lay Prayer Books, Imago, imagines, Image/s in Přemyslid era: Contexts and Forms, Reflecting Jerusalem in Medieval Czech Lands; NAKI: The Image of the Enemy: Visual Manifestations of Antisemitism in the Czech Lands from the Middle Ages to the Present. Beginning in 2017, Dienstbier has been an editor of the Umění / Art journal. He specialises in medieval wall painting, illuminated manuscripts, and iconography of medieval art.
