The project proposes to investigate the interest of the nobility in photography as a key factor in the development of photographic culture in the Czech lands in the 1840s–1860s. In addition to focusing on specific members of the nobility who played the prominent role of commissioners, patrons, and collectors, it considers go-betweens who played a decisive role of intermediation between the world of photography and the nobility’s environment, especially the closed world of the Austrian aristocracy. Through an extensive survey of Czech and European collections, archives and period publications, the project aims to identify, analyse, and contextualize a critical mass of photographs and other relevant visual and written documents that will allow investigating key trajectories and communication channels between the local milieu and European photographic centres. As a result, it will not only lead to a better understanding of history of photography in Europe, but also to closer links between Czech and international photographic historiography.
