The first of three editorial projects presenting at least a portion of the uniquely preserved received correspondence of art historian and key figure of Czech/Czechoslovak cultural policy, Zdeněk Wirth (1878–1961). From Wirth’s extensive body of correspondence, we have selected letters, postcards, and picture postcards that he received from four architects and one female architect. In the cases of Dušan Jurkovič, Kamil Hilbert, and Pavel Janák, fragments of Wirth’s replies have also survived and are included in the edition. The edited correspondence offers a unique insight into the intellectual world of these five prominent figures and, in many instances, reveals the background of numerous processes that shaped the cultural life of the first half of the 20th century.
