Eva Jarošová - Vanda Fouňová (eds.)
A publication resulting from the 22nd international session on sepulchral monuments held on November 1–2, 2023 in Prague. The collection of sixteen texts by prominent specialists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany is devoted to Christian, Jewish and partly also Islamic epigraphics and funeral culture. The papers focus on sepulchral monuments in a broad understanding of funeral culture, comprising not only tombstones as material artefacts but also testaments, bells and other elements related to pious memory and rituals, with a factual and methodical relation to Central Europe, including comparative overlaps, for example, to Finland. The fifteenth volume of the Epigraphica & Sepulcralia edition is also an homage to Jiří Roháček, a crucial figure in the field, to whose memory the autumn session was dedicated. The publication therefore opens with a personal remembrance of Dr. Franz-Albrecht Bornschlegel, the vice-chairman of the project Deutsche Inschriften des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
First edition in Czech and in English, 411 pages, black and white illustrations, Prague: Artefactum 2024
